Building Confidence in Front of the Camera

Feeling awkward in front of a camera at first is completely normal. Confidence on set is a skill you build with practice, not something you either have or don't.
Why confidence matters
Clients and agencies aren't just looking at your features; they're looking at how you move, react and hold a pose under a bit of pressure. Genuine ease in front of the lens photographs far better than a forced smile.
Start before the shoot
Practise at home
Spend a few minutes in front of a mirror or your phone camera:
- Try different angles and see which feel natural
- Notice what your face does when you relax versus when you're posing
- Practise walking, turning and simple transitions between poses
Get comfortable with being looked at
Confidence often comes from familiarity. The more you practise, the less strange it feels to have attention on you.
On the day
Breathe and slow down
Nerves make people rush. Take a breath between poses, let your shoulders drop, and give yourself a moment to reset if something doesn't feel right.
Work with the photographer
A good photographer will direct you. Listen, try what they suggest even if it feels unnatural at first, and ask if you're unsure what they mean by a direction.
Treat mistakes as normal
Nobody nails every shot. Blinking, awkward frames and stiff poses happen to everyone, including experienced models. They simply get edited out or reshot.
Small habits that help over time
- Warm up your face and shoulders before shooting — tension shows on camera
- Study a variety of images, not to copy poses exactly, but to notice posture and expression
- Keep a shortlist of angles and expressions that work well for you
- Ask for honest feedback after every shoot, and actually use it
Confidence grows with experience
Every test shoot, assessment day or portfolio session adds to your comfort level. Confidence isn't something you need to arrive with; it's something that develops as you shoot more.
