How to Spot Modelling Scams: A Red Flags Checklist
Modelling is an exciting industry to break into, but its popularity also attracts people looking to take advantage of newcomers. Knowing the warning signs early protects your money, your images and your confidence.
Why modelling scams happen
New faces are often excited, a little nervous, and unfamiliar with how the industry actually operates. That combination makes it easier for dishonest operators to pressure people into paying for things they don't need, or handing over images and rights they shouldn't.
Red flags to watch for
Money moving the wrong way
Be cautious if someone:
- Asks for large upfront fees before any work has happened
- Pressures you to pay immediately, with no time to think it over
- Guarantees paid jobs or a specific income in exchange for payment
- Asks you to pay through unusual methods that are hard to trace or refund
Genuine model support services and agencies are upfront about what they charge for and why. Anyone promising guaranteed bookings or earnings is not being honest with you — nobody in this industry can promise that.
Pressure and secrecy
- Rushing you into decisions "before the offer disappears"
- Discouraging you from telling family or friends
- Refusing to meet in a proper studio or professional setting
- Being vague about who they are or which company they represent
Contracts and images
- Contracts with no clear end date or unusually broad rights over your images
- Reluctance to give you a copy of anything you sign
- Requests for images that go beyond what was agreed, especially anything involving under-18s
Sensible checks before you commit
- Search the company or individual's name along with the word "review"
- Ask for a proper studio address and landline or verified contact details

- Bring a parent, guardian or trusted friend to any first meeting
- Never send explicit images, and never feel pressured to
What a legitimate process looks like
A genuine test shoot or assessment day, whether with an agency or a support service, will explain costs clearly in advance, let you ask questions, and never rush you.
