Digitals and Polaroids Explained
If you've spent any time researching modelling, you've probably come across the terms "digitals" or "polaroids." They sound old-fashioned, but they remain one of the most important tools in the industry.
What are digitals?
Digitals (still often called polaroids, from the days of instant film) are simple, unretouched photographs that show exactly what you look like. No heavy makeup, no dramatic lighting, no editing.
They usually include:
- A few straight-on face shots
- A profile shot from each side
- A few full-length shots in simple clothing
Why they matter more than glossy photos
It might seem strange that a plain, unedited photo can matter more than a polished, professionally styled one, but there's a good reason for it.
Agencies and clients need to see your genuine proportions, skin and features, because that's what they'll be working with on a real job. An overly retouched or heavily styled image can actually work against you, since it doesn't show them what they'd actually be booking.
What good digitals look like
- Natural daylight or simple, even studio lighting
- A plain, uncluttered background
- Minimal or no makeup, so your natural skin is visible
- Hair worn naturally, pulled back for at least some shots
- Fitted, simple clothing that doesn't hide your shape
Preparing for your digitals
- Arrive with clean, moisturised skin and no heavy makeup
- Wear simple, well-fitted basics rather than patterns or logos
- Get a good night's sleep beforehand — tiredness shows
- Stay hydrated in the days before your shoot
- Bring a plain top or two as backups, if asked to
Digitals versus a full portfolio
Digitals are a starting point, not a finished product. A full portfolio builds on your digitals with a wider range of styled images once you have a clearer sense of your strengths and market. Many people also use their best images to put together Z-cards once they're ready to approach agencies.
How often do they need updating?
Because digitals are meant to reflect exactly how you look now, they're usually refreshed periodically, especially after any significant change in hairstyle, weight or age (this matters particularly for younger models, who change quickly).
