What Happens on an Assessment Day

Booking your first assessment day can feel like a big step into the unknown. Knowing roughly what to expect can take a lot of the nerves out of it.

Before you arrive

Most assessment days start with some simple preparation:

• Confirmation of time, location and what to bring
• Guidance on hair, makeup and clothing (usually simple, well-fitted basics)
• A reminder to come as you are — assessment days are about your natural look, not a finished, styled result

If you're under 18, a parent or guardian will need to attend with you. This isn't a formality; it's there to protect you and to make sure every decision is made with proper consent.

Arrival and introductions

On the day, you'll usually be welcomed by a member of the team who explains how the day will run. This is a good moment to ask questions about anything you're unsure of, including costs, timings and what happens to your images afterwards.

The assessment itself

A short consultation

Most days begin with a conversation about your goals, experience so far and any questions you have. This helps the team understand what kind of modelling might suit you.

Digitals or polaroids

You'll usually have simple, unretouched digital shots taken. These aren't meant to be glamorous; they show your natural proportions, skin and features honestly, which is exactly what agencies and clients want to see.

Guided posing practice

A team member will usually guide you through basic poses and expressions, giving feedback as you go. This is where a lot of people relax and start to enjoy the process.

Feedback

Towards the end of the day, you'll typically get honest feedback covering:

• Your natural strengths in front of the camera
• Areas that might need more practice
• Realistic next steps, whether that's a full portfolio session or working on confidence first

Feedback should always be constructive and honest, not falsely flattering. Nobody can promise you paid work at this stage.

After the day

Depending on what you decide, next steps might include booking a portfolio shoot, working on Z-cards, or simply taking time to think it over. There's no obligation to continue immediately.
