Starting out in modelling can feel overwhelming, with a lot of conflicting advice online. Here's a straightforward guide to the practical first steps.

Step 1: Get honest about your starting point

Before anything else, it helps to understand where you genuinely stand:

• Have you had any professional photos taken before?
• Do you know your accurate measurements?
• Are you comfortable, or at least willing to practise being comfortable, in front of a camera?

There's no wrong answer here. Everyone starts somewhere.

Step 2: Learn how the industry actually works

Modelling covers far more than catwalks and magazine covers. Commercial, editorial, fitness and promotional work are all genuine parts of the industry. Spend some time understanding the different types of modelling before deciding what interests you.

Step 3: Build genuine experience

Book an assessment or test shoot

An assessment day is usually the most useful first step. It gives you:

• Simple, honest digitals that show your natural look
• Constructive feedback from people who understand the industry
• A realistic sense of your strengths and what to work on

Practise in front of a camera

Confidence builds with repetition. Practising basic poses and expressions at home, even briefly, makes a real difference before your first proper shoot.

Step 4: Build a portfolio

Once you have some experience and feedback, a proper portfolio puts your best, most representative images together. This is what you'll eventually show agencies or clients.

Step 5: Understand costs before committing

Ask clearly what any service costs and what's included before booking anything. Reputable services explain this upfront, with no pressure and no hidden extras.

Step 6: Consider agency representation, when ready

Not everyone needs an agency straight away, and some people choose not to use one at all. If and when you do approach agencies, you'll be in a far stronger position with genuine experience and honest images behind you.
